“Treat me well” (Tracta’m bé)

“Treat me well” (Tracta’m bé)

Summary

“Tracta’m bé”, which means “treat me well”, is a strategy by the City of Igualada that aims to prevent the physical, psychological, sexual and economic abuse related to the age. “Tracta’m bé” is implemented via two main lines: First one is through informative posters placed in strategic places as local shops. In these posters the people who appear are citizens from Igualada and represent everyday scenes that are example of a good treatment, the photo is accompanied by a text inviting the reflection of the reader. The second measure is a book of short stories that tell abuse scenes. The stories are told by older people who, at the same time, are the main character. These stories can be used in schools to engage with students to break stereotypes and to learn about different realities of older people.Tracta’m bé is promoted by Igualada city hall, and Anoia county council thanks to an agreement with Solsonès county council who were the first to identify and address the need of denounce mistreatment of older people and who designed the interventions adopted to achieve the different aims. Of course, this project depends the collaboration with other actors in the city – both public and private sectors. We cannot yet estimate the impact of the project because it is ongoing, but the results by Solsonès county council colleagues who implemented the plan a few years ago are very positive. So we expect the same.

Looking back

Reflections:
We are alert to ensure that the posters are displayed to many citizens. We must ensure that this is so. Fortunately different public and private sector stakeholders are motivated and are contributing to the visibility of the campaign. Also, in an intergenerational line of thought, we could develop some interventions with the contribution of young people as well as with older people
