Summary

In 2017, the Miami-Dade Transportation Planning Organization, one of the lead agencies of the Miami-Dade Age-Friendly Initiative, developed the Miami-Dade Aging Road User Strategic Safety Plan.

The goal of the plan is: To improve the safety and mobility of the County’s aging road users by reducing their fatalities, serious injuries, and crashes, while maintaining their mobility and independence. An “aging road user” is a driver, passenger, pedestrian, bicyclist, transit rider, motorcyclist, or operator of a non-motorized vehicle, who is 65 years of age and older.

Engaging the wider community

Project lead: Local authorities

Others involved in the project:
  • Local authorities
  • Civil Society Organisation
  • Older People’s Association

Older people’s involvement: Older people were not directly involved

Details on older people’s involvement: This was a study based on data and best practices in order to determine a course of action to be carried out in Miami-Dade County. While older people were not directly involved, this plan was compiled using best practices and studies from AAA, AARP, other states, and other countries which included consultation with older adults throughout. Older adults will also be included in all aspects of the plan implementation, including in the Road Safety Audits conducted as a result of this study.

Moving forward

Has the impact of this age-friendly practice been analysed: No

Do you plan to evaluate your age-friendly practice? Yes

Expansion plans:
This initial Road User Strategic Safety Plan has several recommendations to implement. This practice will expand as each portion is developed. There are also plans to evaluate the effectiveness of the plan using updated data.

Looking back

Challenges:
Due to budget and resource constraints, this plan will be implemented over several years. For example, a Road Safety Audit was conducted for Tier I facilities in 2019, but the RSAs for Tier II and Tier III facilities have not yet begun.
