The Laboratório de Inovação Social aims to promote collaborative experimentation with new solutions to social problems in the city of Porto. Starting from a policy of failing fast and well, it proposes to develop a model of structured experimentation – based on processes and methodologies of impact, and on promoting the spill-over of the knowledge generated. It is intended to mobilise and involve all sectors of society in a systemic approach to the city’s social problems, which will generate more efficient, effective and sustainable responses and create a virtuous circle of collective learning.
In the first edition of the Social Innovation Lab, 41 proposals were submitted to address three social problems, including social isolation among older people. Of the applications received for the competition organized by the Social Innovation Center, the most notable are social organizations, entrepreneurs, academic research centers, companies and individual citizens who presented 22 solutions that aim to address the social problem of isolation among older people. At this time, 3 of the 5 projects with potential impact in the incubation phase are aimed at improving the lives of older people. In the second edition, the social problems related to the older people requiring innovative solutions will remain open for competition.
