Apart from assuring sufficient provision of healthcare and social welfare service to older persons, directing more resources on enhancing facilities in the community is also important on building an age-friendly physical environment. The Southern District is enhancing progressively the pedestrian facilities for ameliorating accessibility for older persons. Installation of hand railings and seats adjacent to the road from the restricted access at Lee Nam Road to Ap Lei Chau No. 2 Fresh Water Service Reservoir is one of the new construction of practical facilities which benefits older persons, as this location is frequently visited by older persons. The project is intended to facilitate the older persons with mobility impairments walking up the staircase. As older persons may be unsteady on their feet, installing hand railings can provide additional support and safety. The construction work also includes adding seats on both sides of the roadway for use by older persons and public in need. Their age-friendly design allows older persons to sit down comfortably and take a rest with sufficient resting places. The Southern District will continue to improve different facilities, with the aim of developing an age-friendly city that caters for the needs and interests of older persons in the District.
