Gdynia Third Year University is up online!

Summary

A wonderful news for senior students of Gdynia Third Year University (GUTW) and for everyone, who want to learn something new or develop their skills.  Gdynia Third Year University just went up online! Soon in the web are about to appear lectures especially for Gdynia senior citizens.

Gdynia Third Year University is third biggest academy in Poland for seniors. In October 2019 it has inaugurated its 16th academic year – for more than two thousands students. They can choose from between tens of themed lectures (i.a. psychology, genealogy, music and literature) and foreign language course. Moreover University awaits students with a number of activities beyond the university – like theatre, artistic, dance, cinematic or stylization ones.

In the middle of March 2020 due to spreading of Coronavirus, the academy closed itself until further notice together with over 25 local seniors’ clubs.

In Gdynia currently we have ten thousand active seniors, who attend club’s and GUTW’s classes. From the beginning of this difficult situation we were working, so that everyone could continue  classes as well as to give seniors the opportunity to meet with each other even virtually.  Today I proudly invite all of senior citizens to dive into incredible Virtual Senior Activity Center, where lecturers from diverse topics await for everyone– says Michał Guć, Deputy Mayor of Gdynia – Especially for Gdynia older inhabitants professors and educators have recorded their lectures and prepared exercises from subjects, that normally have been chosen at the beginning of the academic year. Thanks to Virtual University each Gdynia senior citizen can be the student of GUTW, no matter if he or she has index or not. All it takes is to turn on a computer or another device, choose interesting subject and you start learning”

Virtual Gdynia Third Year University can be found under the address www.wirtualny.cas.gdynia.pl

It was very important for us to upkeep the student’s enthusiasm and rhythm of our seniors. That’s why we have asked lecturers of GUTW to work on proper material, that we could share in the same day and time as the original stationary meetings / classes in GUTW – explains Bożena Zglińska, director of Gdynia Activation Center. – It is already possible to listen to over a dozen of lectures from subjects like: history; classical music and meetings with opera; family histories with a photo in the back. Also there is a memory test. The number of these proposals and offer grow and the lectures are available online for longer time. This is a wonderful base of knowledge, which can be acquired from the very start and the one that can be perpetuated, is very much appreciated.

Morover, to simplify mutual contacts for seniors, but also to give a hint how to spend their time at home, when senior clubs don’t work as well as the GUTW, the facebook group was created named “Gdyńscy Seniorzy – Wirtualnie”. It’s a virtual space, where seniors can share the information where to find free e-books and audiobooks, where the livestreams of concerts and theatre spectacles are broadcasted or which museums made their collections available online. It’s also the communication tool for every seniors with the need of just talk with others.

Feedback:
Yes, the initative was very appreciated. because of constant pandemic situation the new academic year of Third Year University is also Virtual University for 2020-2021

Expansion plans:
The initiative is crucial to give the support and interesting educational offer for elderly citizens but what is the most important it encourage seniors to be safe at home. It appeared that not only Gdynia seniors take part in virtual classes and lectures and that gives learning opportunities that are wide. The initiative can also be implemented in order to reach elderly people or people with disabilities that are not able to leave their homes. Of course the internet access, equipment and basic knowledge how to use online tools are necessary for successful implementation and dissemination.

Looking back
