From roundabout to meeting place for people

From roundabout to meeting place for people

Summary

In the summer of 2020, the new main square in Trondheim was officially opened. The result has been a universally designed gathering place with local slate in the ground and a thousand seats outside the serving areas.

Emphasis has been placed on good orientation, accessibility and wide walkways along and across the square. The many seats are easy to access with a wheelchair. The open square in the middle is arranged for small and large events. In addition, there is a lot of art and fine details to look at. The square has become attractive and accessible to everyone, as a spectator or participant.

Looking back

Challenges:
The challenge was to create an attractive and lively square for as many people as possible. The turf before and now is like night and day. Here is activity every day; better accessible for the disabled, good structure for the visually impaired. Guidelines and contrasts could have been even better. The many and varied seats are suitable for everyone.
