Summary

The Can Do image library is a collection of 80 photos and 3 videos that shows local people of all ages and abilities participating in the community in meaningful ways. The photos are recognisable; they show local faces, landmarks and businesses. The Can Do images and videos were designed to be used across Council directorates to ensure publications are inclusive and representative of Macedon Ranges Shire’s diversity. Since the development of the Can Do library the images have been published in Council’s Annual Report, on the Over 55s Connect Facebook page, in Council Enewsletters and as part of promotional material for consultation of our new Disability Action Plan.

Age-friendly practice in detail (click to expand):

Engaging the wider community

Project lead: Local authorities

Older people’s involvement: Older people were involved in the age-friendly practice at multiple or all stages

Details on older people’s involvement: In the consultation stages it was recognised by older people that there were not any images of local older people participating in the community in meaningful ways. It was also established that publications did not accurately represent the older community. Older people were also models for the photo shoot, doing what they do every day in the community.

Feedback:
We have received great feedback from council departments about the images. They have recently been published in Council’s Annual Report, in flyers and newsletters. A video about volunteering in the community was posted on the Over 55s Connect Facebook page and received high engagement from our followers.

Expansion plans:
Yes, we plan to continue to advocate across council for the use of our images. We also plan to revamp our Over 55s Connect Facebook page by using our new images. This will give the page a more local feel.
