Summary

In 2015 Banyule held the inaugural Banyule Best Biz Awards. Residents were encouraged to vote online for their favourite local business under a number of categories. Unfortunately, not all residents who shop locally were able to vote online. In particular the older adults within our community who may not feel comfortable, may not have the skills or access to vote online. The Banyule Age-friendly Advisory Committee became aware of this issue. The Committee put a proposal to Council to include paper based voting in the future. Council resolved to include paper based voting and online in the 2106 Best Biz Awards, to ensure that all community members who wished to vote for their favourite business could. The number of votes doubled. This example highlights the Age-friendly Advisory Committee’s ability to raise issues that impact on the inclusion of all residents in activities of the Council. Council was responsive to the issue and a solution was found.
