Summary
Age-Friendly Cardiff facilitated two Ageing and Climate Change Workshops at Cardiff Central Library Hub as part of an academic research project. The purpose of the sessions was for participants to reflect on how extreme weather affects their health and wellbeing. Researchers from the University of York and Heriot-Watt University asked older people to share their experience of how storms, flooding, and heatwaves have affected their lives as part of a nationwide study on healthy ageing and climate change.
The first workshop involved older adults only, and focused on identifying key challenges, with the second workshop brought together older adults and representatives from key stakeholder organisations to discuss co-designing potential solutions for the identified issues.
The project was funded by UK Research and Innovation through its Healthy Ageing Challenge, and the study will build on the World Health Organization’s Age-Friendly Cities and Communities work, which encourages active ageing by creating improved opportunities for health, community participation, and to enhance people’s quality of life as they age. Working with older people’s groups and key climate change experts, the project explored how to tackle extreme weather by co-designing potential solutions at the local, community, and city level.
