Summary

Ruter age-friendly transport (RAT), also called “Pink bus”, is a door-to-door transport service with flexibility around travel time. It is a public transport service offered by the City Council of Oslo. RAT is available to customers aged 67 and up, but is especially aimed at those in the age group who have challenges using the ordinary public transport service.

The study shows that users have greater problems with using the ordinary public transport service and have more physical problems that limit their ability to travel than those who do not use the service. In addition, the study shows that RAT contributes to a better quality of life in several ways. RAT users become more independent in everyday life, can live more active and social lives, get better health, and experience more security on the journey compared to the use of ordinary public transport.

Looking back

Challenges:
Having the finances to run the program along with enough buses to meet demand posed two challenges. A secondary operational challenge is responding to traffic and ensuring the RAT users are able to get to their desired locations in an efficient manner.
