Summary

Increased age is associated with increased disability, which may impact an individual’s ability to remain at home. Most older people would prefer to remain in their homes as they age. The way that homes are constructed can enable people with physical limitations, of all ages, to remain socially engaged, and home design principles can facilitate the ability to age in place. Age-friendly Sarasota is responding to the aspirations of their aging residents in a variety of ways including through enhancing accessibility of housing. In December 2015, the Sarasota Board of County Commissioners adopted a resolution on Universal Design and Visitability program for residential housing units. The resolution encourages providers and builders of housing in the County to construct housing and communities which are safe and enable residents to move around easily in their communities and to age in place. While the resolution is voluntary, Sarasota County provides an incentive for adherence by certifying those local housing projects that meet the criteria for universal design and visitability (see the attached checklist). The resolution is expected to incentivize and increase the amount of universally-designed housing stock.
