Summary

Residents championing Banyule as an age-friendly city have just celebrated their third birthday and are putting out the call to others to join them. Since Council’s Age-friendly Champion initiative started in 2014, 100 Banyule residents have been trained to be Age-friendly Champions and been involved in a string of projects that improve the quality of older people’s lives. They have been involved in establishing a quarterly Age in Focus newsletter, nature programs, an older adults’ photographic exhibition and taken part in local and state wide research and think tank sessions.
Banyule Mayor Cr Mark Di Pasquale said that local Age-friendly Champions were activity influencing the shape of the City of Banyule.
“Council made a commitment when we were accepted by the World Health Organisation to be part of the Global Network of Age-friendly Cities in 2014 to having older people actively contribute to our activities. “And that has definitely been happening,” he said.
“This city’s Champions are making sure older adults are being heard.” Banyule’s Age-friendly program is a volunteer-based initiative open to all residents. Participants are involved in projects that improve the quality of life of older people.

Challenges:
It has been important to make sure that Council Officers (or any professionals) always respect and make sure the Age Friendly Champions are fully contributing. These older adults come with a life time of experience and expertise. They don’t need to be ‘baby sat’ they are ready to contribute and make change happen.
