Activities of Kamome Housing Complex, Yokosuka City

Summary

Kamome Housing Complex in Yokosuka City is an old estate built in 1969. It is characterized by a high rate (57%) of residents aged 65 and over, and a large number of single older people from 60 to 80 years old. The complex’s neighborhood association, with the support from the Kanagawa Prefectural Government and the City of Yokosuka, has been running following programs: “Community Café Nagomi” visited by average of 15 people per day; “Mind and Body Refreshing Class” joined by 20-35 people every class; and “Morning Radio Gymnastics” attended by 80 people every day.

The housing complex has carried out a program aimed at creating a safe and secure community where older people living with dementia can live safely and where aged wanderers are looked after by their neighbours.

This program won the Welfare Minister’s excellency award in the category of nursing care prevention/life support for older people at the 5th Longer Healthy Life Expectancy Contest in 2014.
