Summary

“A Kinder World” aims at strengthening the connection between generations by means of engaging older people in creative and charitable activities targeted towards orphaned children of pre-school and school age. The project is divided into 4 parts, each with its own activities of focus, “Gifted with creativity”, “Charity”, “Mentorship”, and “Precious moments.” It is an intersectoral collaboration organized and implemented by the Social Support Committee of Volgograd city administration, the Public Chamber of Volgograd, and the Elderly People Club. The main goals of the program are to provide older people opportunities for intergenerational socialization and personal fulfilment, and to contribute to their community. -“Gifted with creativity” enables older people to teach orphans crafts (stitching, knitting, origami, etc.) as well as the basics of cooking and housekeeping. -To participate in the “Charity” subproject means to become a patron of an abandoned child in an orphanage. Older people hand-knit baby-shoes, scarfs, socks and other pieces, and give them to baby orphans. Apart from that, older people organize their own performance ensembles and participate in different events held in the orphanages, communicate and play with children. -The “Mentorship” component allows older people who achieved great success in their lives to tell their stories to orphaned children and encourage them to use their potential. This is one of the ways to introduce young people to various jobs and occupations and help them find their path in life.- In the frame of the “Precious moments” subproject, older people from among war veterans meet the young generation. Such meetings are organized in order to preserve heroic memories of the past and share them with the new generations along with the knowledge of the history of our country.

In 2015 we started collaborating with many new structures and organizations like the Rotary club. Whenever our partners organize the event, older people are also invited, so that helps to involve more participants.
