Summary
The St. James’ Settlement Wan Chai District Elderly Community Centre was funded by The Community Chest to run the “Community Based Health Involvement Project” from 2020 to 2022. This project aims to launch a community networking programme for frail older people living in the three sub-districts in Hong Kong (i.e. Causeway Bay, Tai Hang and North Point). It focuses on fostering positive living attitudes and promoting healthy living lifestyles.
Through the provision of regular community health talks, exhibitions, distribution of health pamphlets, and community health check programmes, the health awareness of older people has been enhanced. Additionally, mutual support groups for patients with chronic illnesses have also been formed. To increase local participation, the project also uses the “train-the-trainer approach” to develop a pool of volunteers to assist with the project.
Due to the outbreak of COVID pandemic, most of the community health talks, exhibitions, and community health check programmes in 2020 were postponed. The programme has gradually resumed in October 2020.
