Summary

The Southern District puts great emphasis on strengthening the support for older people across many different aspects of community facilities and the living environment. To foster an age-friendly environment in the community, increasing the provision of elderly-friendly facilities in public areas is a key concern.

In order to address the needs of older people living in the District, the construction project of a rainshelter at Lei Tung Estate Road near Yue On Court Road in Ap Lei Chau was conducted for protecting older passengers against rain and sun. Moreover, the rain shelters (south and north bounds) at Wah Fu Road and Shek Pai Wan Road were also replaced and extended by improving the current structure of a rain shelter.

With protection against the rain and sun, older people can easily take a break at the shelter on their way to or from a long walking journey throughout the district. The installation and extension projects of rain shelters mentioned above aims to provide increased age-friendly facilities in public areas. The Southern District will continue to study the feasibility to cater to the needs and interests of older people in the community and will make an effort to increase public awareness on the concept of building an age-friendly community.
