Intergenerational Project

Intergenerational Project

Summary

The City of Moncton is participating in an intergenerational initiative involving the Mayor’s Seniors’ Advisory Committee and Mayor’s Youth Advisory Committee. This is part of the New Brunswick Healthy Seniors Pilot Project (PHAC & NB Gov) initiative ‘iGAP’ InterGenerational Action Plan to help improve the quality of life of older adults in New Brunswick with small acts every day. The Youth Committee will be preparing videos, such as baking videos and arts and crafts to share with older adults. We are also exploring other ideas such as providing computer training online. This year at Christmas, due to Covid-19, the City hosted a virtual concert online and this was available on the City of Moncton Facebook Page. We have a distribution list for older adults and they were provided the link to watch the concert.

We hope to plan more intergenerational activities and keep our seniors up to date on virtual events during this covid crisis.

Age-friendly practice in detail (click to expand):

Engaging the wider community

Project lead: Local authorities

How collaboration worked: We have the Mayor’s Seniors Advisory Committee which is collaborating with the Province in this case, as it is a provincial initiative. The Senior’s Advisory Committee also participates in providing input to the City in terms of its amenities, including parks, arenas, etc. to ensure they are age-friendly.

Older people’s involvement: Older people were involved in the age-friendly practice at multiple or all stages

Details on older people’s involvement: Our committee consists of older adults. We also have a distribution for older adults list and send out surveys on various city initiatives to obtain their feedback. Our committee also listens to older presenters on various events or activities that occur in the City.

Moving forward

Has the impact of this age-friendly practice been analysed: No

Do you plan to evaluate your age-friendly practice? Yes

Feedback:
We have received positive feedback on various events that have been held for older adults in the City, including our Intergenerational Day Event and Senior Friendly Business initiative. These are generally well attended.

Looking back

Challenges:
This year, we have faced challenges with respect to Covid-19. We are also facing challenges in reaching older adults who may not have technology and live alone in their homes. We do send newsletters to the seniors centres in the area to keep them apprised of City events and activities.
