Summary

This case study was supported by The Centre for Ageing Better and involved partnership working between local older people and Merseytravel who are The Strategic Transport Authority in the Liverpool City Region.The Sefton Partnership for Older Citizens is the strategic board for representing older people’s issues in Sefton. In this case study, members of The Sefton Partnership for Older Citizens, worked together with Merseytravel to gather evidence of the need for lift access to a local train station in the Borough. Members of the partnership led on some peer research with local older citizens that was instrumental in the success of the funding bid to the Department of Transport’s Access for All Programme, a 300 million funding scheme to improve the accessibility of public transport.
The case study also highlights some engagement work that took place between local older people and Merseytravel in developing a new train model for Merseyside. This will be the most accessible train rolling stock in the country.
The case study demonstrates the effectiveness of partnership working and involvement of older people in strategic decision making and also how a local partnership can have regional impact.

How collaboration worked: The partnership between older people and Merseytravel enabled, Merseytravel to make a successful bid to the Access for All funding pot. Older People have also been upskilled in their engagement relationship with our Regional Transport Authority and now our relationship is on a more strategic basis.

We have been very pleased to be supported by the Centre for Ageing Better to capture our Age Friendly Practice as a Case Study. This support and input really helped us to achieve our goals.
