The municipality of Doñihue maintains a policy of support and care for the elderly, which is expressed both in the area of municipal health and in the direct efforts of the municipality with the elderly. Some examples of this policy are the following:

  • Priority in the use of municipality recreational units in the commune of El Tabo (a coastal town located in the Fifth Region); each Seniors Club is entitled to five days in that locality, once a year, which includes transport, stay and accommodation, with a minimum payment per person.
  • Municipal agencies assist Senior Clubs’ to carry out their activities.
  • Exclusive celebrations for the elderly: an annual “mateada,” the party “We spend August,” and carnivals during the month of the elderly.
  • Workshops for the elderly, both in physical activities and in psychological and/or social development activities.
  • Constant support to the Communal Union of Older Adults of the commune.
  • Social assistance in situations of socioeconomic emergencies.
  • Transportation to health facilities, in the commune, as well as in the region or in other regions.
  • The municipality manages the logistics for the “Vacaciones Tercera Edad” (Senior Holidays) program, which depends on a subsidy from the state.
  • City planning efforts to ensure that Doñihue is increasingly inclusive of the elderly in terms of access to establishments and travel around the city.

The objectives of the municipality are to ensure the full integration of the elderly into society, protect them from abandonment and destitution, enforce the rights that the Constitution and laws recognize, and prevent discrimination and marginalization.
