San Bernardo has made many efforts to become an age-friendly commune and support our elderly population in recent years. Some examples of these actions and programs include:

  • For five years we have held the annual coronation of older adults (Reinado del Adulto Mayor); in 2018, 1,500 adults from more than 130 clubs participated. We celebrate this day with dignity and concern for every detail to make it an unforgettable day for our elderly community.
  • Sports and recreation: We offer several workshops, including crewell, Mexican embroidery, felt, loom, crafts, crafts, folk groups, jewelry, decoupage, integral beauty, cueca, among others. For sports, there are various activities offered, such as gymnastics, swimming, basketball, yoga, water aerobics, badminton, and others.
  • Health services: We have a variety of ways of connecting older adults with health services including health fairs and educational talks on topics such as grief, resilience, sexuality, and diseases that are all taught by health professionals. In addition, we have preferential rows and elevators in all of our CESFAM facilities in the commune, opthalmological agreements (UAPO) and subsidies for examinations and medications for older persons.
  • We carry out training for all seniors and leaders of different organizations of older adults, in relation to projects, grants and competitive funds, as well as on garbage exemptions and different topics in order to provide greater clarity to older adults.
  • The mayor, Mrs. Nora Cuevas, created the Heritage Route for the elderly, strategically placing several seats in different points of the commune, with the purpose that every few meters, there is a place for older adults to rest and make travel more friendly from one side of the commune to another.
  • The Office for Older Adults has existed for more than 10 years. The mayor wanted it to be comfortable for older adults, so he invested in television, heating, and comfortable chairs, in order to deliver a complete service for all elderly users who wait for his attention regarding social assistance, legal advice and other spontaneous care they require.
  • This year, we are working on a project for the Day Center for the elderly, which will benefit a large number of users who are unable to leave their homes today, as well as their families and caregivers.
