Tel Aviv-Yafo is a global and multicultural city, the second most populous city in Israel and in the conurbation of the Dan metropolitan area. Since 2000, there has been an over 13% percent increase in the city’s aging population. In 2017, there were 67,900 people over the age of 65 living in the city, making up 15% of the total population of the city (well over the national average of 11%). It is estimated that by 2035 this number will increase to 91,000 people over the age of 65.
Our policy vision aims to create an Age-Friendly Tel Aviv-Yafo and to provide our senior citizens with a better quality of life, enabling them active lifestyles and healthy aging with community-based, safe and accessible environment. Our strategy and action plan was based on information-gathering process included ongoing discussions, advisory groups and wide community conversations with seniors’ citizens and other stakeholders. Our aim with a mixed-methods approach was to determine the existing age-friendliness of the city and identify ways in which it can become more age-friendly.
The strategy informed four key priority issues which were identified as opportunities:
 building local collaborations, communities’ network and inter-organizational activities
 promoting meaningful daily activities by facilitating volunteer-led groups and champions
 developing innovative solutions using technology to disrupt ageing
 enhancing intergenerational relations and solidarity to raise awareness and strengthen community resilience
The action plan proposes long and short term projects and services in six domains: Active and healthy living; Dementia services; Employment; Housing; Outdoor spaces and built environment; Social inclusion, voluntary activities and community support. Our future plans include incorporating technological tools as a TV platform to connect social clubs to bedridden elderly and a resident card to deliver personalized information and discounts.
