Title

Make sure that enough staff members are trained in providing first aid or that access to first aid is ensured

Why

Access to first aid must be ensured to facilitate rapid treatment of injured persons.

What

Ensure quick access to first aid. This can be achieved in two ways:

  • If the laboratory is situated in a hospital injured persons can be treated there directly
  • If the laboratory is not situated in a hospital enough staff members must have formal medical training or need to be trained in providing first aid. Select the staff members such that at least one first aid provider is always present in the laboratory during working hours.

How & who

Laboratory Manager:

  1. Select staff members to train first aid provision if necessary.
    After training:
  2. Store the training certificates in the personnel files of the trained staff members.
  3. Adapt the Personal Job Descriptions of the trained staff members.
  4. Adapt the applicable procedures in the Biosafety Manual to include the tasks and responsibilities of the first aid providers.
  5. Notify to the laboratory staff the location where first aid can be obtained or the names of the first aid providers and that they should go to them in case of injury. It is also recommended to place an information sheet with the location/names of the first aid providers at a location visible to all staff members such as a noticeboard.
  6. Ensure regular refresher training for the first aid providers (at least once a year)
