Title

Install a visual indicator for directional airflow in the laboratory rooms

Why

It is important to make sure that the air is not flowing in the direction of the workbench (blowing the bacteria towards the technologist). A technologist working with pathogens should be able to see in which direction air is flowing.

What

This can be very simple, for example a piece of tissue-paper near the workbench that clearly shows which way the air is flowing.

How & who

Biosafety Officer:

  1. Investigate in which rooms an air flow indicator needs to be installed. Use the following criteria:
    • The work in the room entails processing of airborne pathogens
    • Work with those pathogens is done outside flow cabinets
  2. Find an appropriate type of air-direction indicator.
  3. Find the best place for the indicator and install it.
  4. Validate: test if the indicator is indeed showing correctly which direction air is flowing.
