Access to medical products is one of the priorities identified in WHO’s General Programme of Work. It is one of the indispensable pillars to strengthen national health systems–one of the building blocks to move towards universal health coverage. Difficulties in accessing affordable and quality-assured medicines, vaccines and health products (including diagnostics and devices, as well as blood and blood products) lead to onerous out-of-pocket payments and to financial hardship.
The UHC Partnership supports countries in improving access to essential medicines, vaccines, diagnostics and devices for primary health care by bringing WHO’s expertise in strengthening regulatory capacity for safety, ensuring efficient and transparent procurement and supply systems and addressing antimicrobial resistance.
