Background

To reinforce political momentum towards universal health coverage and accelerate the implementation of the Astana Declaration, the best available evidence on the implementation of the PHC approach is needed. Especially, what works and how. The intelligence generated through implementation research, country case studies, leadership-oriented training and partnerships are key to providing this information.

Despite progress made to generate contextualized, policy oriented PHC evidence, competencies and networks, this implementation intelligence requires innovative mechanisms to intensify cross-country and regional learning on the PHC approach. Various global products have been developed in response to this need, including the recently launched publication Implementing the Primary Health Care Approach: A Primer (the Primer) and PHC Country Case Study Compendium — a global web-based search engine for finding and filtering PHC country case studies. Others in development include the inaugural Leadership Course on PHC and Coalition of PHC Partners.

Aim

To spotlight latest and upcoming global products on PHC and discuss opportunities to intensify cross-country and regional exchanges through evidence synthesis, country case compendium, leadership-oriented training and partnerships for the accelerated implementation of the PHC approach.

Objectives

1.    Evidence synthesis: To inform on the recently released publication the PHC Primer and share and discuss other innovative experiences to generate evidence on the implementation of the PHC approach.

2.    Learning & knowledge management: To launch the PHC Country Case Study Compendium, spotlight the forthcoming Leadership Course on PHC, and exchange on novel mechanisms for cross-country capacity building and exchanges of practices.

3.    Partnerships: To share the proposed Coalition of PHC Partners as a mechanism to sustain political momentum for PHC, bridge across countries, and facilitate a dynamic country coalition to collectively redirect health systems towards PHC.

4.    Regional and country forums and platform: To share cross-country learnings using the recently established regional and/or country forums, platforms, and demonstration sites.

Launched in May 2024, the Primary Health Care Country Case Study Compendium (who.int) is a web-based search engine for primary health care (PHC) country case studies. The compendium sets out to:

  • Serve as a global hub for PHC country case studies
  • Enhance the searchability and access to PHC country case studies; and
  • Encourage further work to document PHC country cases.

The compendium is a living resource and is continuously expanding to include new publications. Country cases are searchable by a range of filters including contextual filters (country, WHO region and income level), PHC component, PHC lever, health programme and case study type.
