WHO statement on the 2nd meeting of IHR Emergency Committee on Zika virus and observed increase in neurological disorders and neonatal malformations

The second meeting of the Emergency Committee (EC) convened by the Director-General under the International Health Regulations (2005) (IHR 2005) regarding clusters of microcephaly cases and other neurological disorders in some areas affected by Zika virus was held by teleconference on 8 March 2016, from 13:00 to 16:45 Central European Time. Zika virus: aircraft disinsection for mosquito control posted at WHO web

On 1 February 2016, WHO Director-General declared that the recent cluster of microcephaly cases and other neurological disorders reported in Brazil, following a similar cluster in French Polynesia in 2014, constitutes a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). As a precautionary measure, the Committee advised that standard WHO recommendations regarding disinsection of aircraft and airports should be implemented in order to control the vector (Aedes spp.

Zika Virus - the 4th PHEIC declared by WHO

Dear All,

The sudden rise of Zika Virus and associated prominence in the worlds media has seen it declared by WHO as the 4th Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). The statement can be found at http://www.who.int/mediacentre/news/statements/2016/1st-emergency-committee-zika/en/

Of particular interest to me is the statement that "there should be no restrictions on travel or trade with countries, areas and/or territories with Zika Virus transmission."

WHO to convene an International Health Regulations Emergency Committee on Zika virus

 Zika virus is transmitted to people through the bite of an infected mosquito from the Aedes genus, mainly Aedes aegypti in tropical regions. This is the same mosquito that transmits dengue, chikungunya and yellow fever.  Zika virus,  is known to circulate in Africa, the Americas, Asia and the Pacific, has been recently associated with potential complications such as neurological disorders and neonatal malformations.
