Abstract
In the years 1967-1971 the Zweckverband Bodensee Wasserversorgung (BWV) erected a second long distance water pipeline from the Bodensee to Stuttgart at a total expenditure of nearly 300 million DM. The article describes the supervisory remote control equipment with control panel and attached data processing plant delivered by Brown Boveri.

Abstract
8,464 isolates from patients suffering from burns were typed. In 18,852 wound smears of 697 injured patients, P. aeruginosa was found in 7,650 cases. Dominating were the O groups 5 and 13. In 2,299 smears, however, taken from water pipes, groups 4 and 5 or 3, resp., dominated. Bacterial cultures taken from the environment of patients included P. aeruginosa in only 6.7% mostly type 5. Pseudomonas strains were never resistant to wide spectrum antibiotics. Sensibility was found mostly against Refobacin, carbenicillin, and colistin.

Abstract
Results of the microscopic biological examinations of samples taken from the watermains of Budapest, are reported. The different plant and animal species occurring in the network of water pipes are treated in detail. Factors which play a role in development of the present biological quality are discussed. It was found that the biological quality of drinking water in the individual districts depends decisively on the way of water production.

Abstract
Use of the NK table or a similar one for isometric quadriceps strengthening of the weakened or injured knee is not an efficient use of time if the physical therapist or athletic trainer must hold the weights for his patient during the rest phase between each isometric contraction. Although a stand or pulley system may be used as an alternative for holding the weights, neither solution is practical in terms of ease in administration and storage of equipment. A device which the author found to be effective in solving this problem enables the patient to lift the weights from his extended leg for the duration of the rest phase. The device is constructed from a galvanized water pipe (2 cm in diameter, 69 cm in length) and a steel rod (0.6 cm in diameter, 28 cm in length). The pipe is bent 5 cm at a point 15 cm from the bottom end. The steel rod is welded to the bottom end of the pipe. The steel rod is then heated and bent at both ends. The top end is bent to hook around the weight arm of the knee machine, and the bottom end is bent to lie over the weight arm with a 1.3 cm nob at the end.

Abstract
Safe transport of sewage effluents is ensured by the use of asbestos and cement pressure pipes of 2000 mm gauge which withstand pressures of up to 16 atmospheres. They have excellent properties for this purpose, such as adequate strength; density; negligible chemical, biological, mechanical and electrolytic sensitivities; low incrustration tendency and low resistance to flow. The pipes are 5 m long and are joined together by sleeves and sealed by rubber rings. The pipes are used for the transport of drinking water, the transport of waste waters to treatment plants, and from there towards recirculation. They are also used for well construction and in places where the drinking water and waste water pipe lines are too close to one another.

Abstract
Corrosion of water pipes can be internal or external, and varies according to the pipe material. Its causes can be soil, electrolysis, chemical or electrochemical or even biological. Modern trends of water treatment (softening) and disinfection make water more dangerous for the pipes. Corrosion of pipes has been studied in Western Europe by CEOCOR and in France since 1950 by a Corrosion Commission which has published two books about it and about a theory of natural waters. Great progress has been made towards a better understanding of the corrosion phenomena but its control always remains a question of know how and good sense.

Abstract
Among a sample of 1,252 persons from a total population of about 15,000 people of the Kpelleh tribe in the Bong Range area, 783 (63.2%) were carriers of microfilariae of O. volvulus. The infection was determined by a standardized skin biopsy technique (Walser punch). At the age of 16 to 18 yr more than 50% of the population had detectable larvae in the gluteal skin. Among the adult population the male sex showed a significant preponderance of positivity for microfilariae. The number of noninfected 'susceptibles' decreased annually by a factor of 0.92 to 0.925. About one half of a sample of adult subjects revealed microfilariae in the cephalic region. Findings of diminished vision (≤ 6/60) were compared with the microfilarial density in the anterior segment and in the environment of the eyes. The rate of blindness of 1.18% found in the Bong Range was more than twice as high as in onchocerciasis free regions of Liberia. Blindness appeared to be related to onchocerciasis in the majority of cases. The average age of the completely blind was 54 yr, and the onset of blindness could be dated back to an average of 48 yr. In the unilaterally blind the average age was 40 yr. In this group blindness appeared to be less related to onchocerciasis. Among 1,131 subjects a bilaterally impaired vision was found in 8.3%. Together with the unilaterally blind, the total number of persons with visual damage besides the blind was 9.8% of the population sample at Bong Range.

Abstract
Quantitative aspects of the transmission of O. volvulus have been investigated in an area of the tropical rain forest zone in West Liberia. The daily and annual cycles of biting densities, age composition and infection rates of the Simulium damnosum population have been studied for one or more years at 7 catching sites. Dissections of 67,758 females of S. damnosum revealed a mean annual parous rate of 10.9%; 17.2% of the parous flies carried developing filaria infections, 2.6% third stage larvae of O. volvulus, and 3.0% third stage larvae of other filaria species. An average of 900 O. volvulus larvae theoretically transmitted per man per year was calculated. This transmission potential was associated with a microfilariae carrier rate of 63% in the human population.

Abstract
67 cases of thromboangiitis obliterans were observed between 1961 to 1972. They were all young people who were heavy smokers. Two of 67 cases were females and they smoked waterpipes. One male dipped snuff for 8 yr. The routine treatment after insisting upon complete abstinence from smoking was sympathectomy completed with superrenalectomy. The results were very good. 11 of the patients who continued smoking lost their legs, one of them after 13 operations.
