The Economics of Tobacco Control Project (ETCP) is housed in the Research Unit on the Economics of Excisable Products (REEP) at the University of Cape Town (UCT). It was nominated by the South Africa National Department of Health to host a Knowledge Hub, as designated by the Secretariat of the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC). Establishing the Knowledge Hub illustrates South Africa’s support of the WHO FCTC, and leadership on tobacco taxation.

Our role is to support the Parties to the WHO FCTC by facilitating training, capacity building, technical assistance and knowledge dissemination in the areas of taxation (Article 6) and illicit trade (Article 15).
