Ministry of Health & Medical Services Strategic Plan 2020-2025
The Fiji Ministry of Health and Medical Services Strategic Plan 2020-2025 is a comprehensive framework aimed at strengthening the healthcare system, improving service delivery, and achieving universal health coverage (UHC). It aligns with Fiji’s National Development Plan (NDP) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 3), focusing on equitable access to healthcare, disease prevention, and system resilience. Fiji has made significant progress in expanding healthcare services, improving maternal and child health, and increasing vaccination coverage. Investments in primary healthcare, workforce development, and decentralization of services have enhanced accessibility, particularly in remote areas. However, challenges remain in reducing the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), addressing healthcare workforce shortages, and ensuring financial sustainability. The increasing impact of climate change and natural disasters on public health further complicates long-term planning. The plan emphasizes improving healthcare quality through better patient safety, service efficiency, and digital transformation. Strengthening governance, intersectoral collaboration, and financial sustainability is crucial to ensuring long-term improvements. Expanding emergency preparedness and response mechanisms, particularly for public health threats and climate-related crises, remains a key priority. While Fiji’s health system has demonstrated resilience, successful implementation of the Strategic Plan 2020-2025 will require sustained investment, strengthened health governance, and enhanced technological integration. Addressing structural inefficiencies, health inequities, and funding constraints will be essential to achieving a more robust, inclusive, and sustainable healthcare system.
