Agreement on a strategy for life science 2021
The Agreement on a Strategy for Life Science (2021) in Denmark aims to strengthen the life science industry and its interaction with the healthcare system to enhance patient care, economic growth, and innovation. The strategy responds to the COVID-19 pandemic’s lessons, recognizing Denmark’s strong position in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and medical technology exports, which accounted for 22% of total Danish goods exports in 2020. The agreement sets seven key strategic areas: (1) improving the framework for research and development, including increasing R&D tax deductions and clinical research funding; (2) enhancing the use of health data, through a national platform for data sharing and secure infrastructure; (3) promoting Denmark as a global life science showcase, emphasizing innovative procurement and digital health solutions; (4) ensuring a highly qualified workforce, by supporting digital competencies and continuous education; (5) targeted internationalization and government cooperation, strengthening global regulatory influence and export promotion; (6) fostering healthy and green growth, supporting sustainable solutions in biotech and waste management; and (7) improving knowledge-sharing and collaboration, through the establishment of a National Life Science Council. While Denmark has world-class research, strong public-private collaboration, and a leading green growth agenda, challenges include global competition, regulatory complexity, and the need for sustained investment in innovation. The success of this strategy depends on continued funding, effective policy implementation, and international cooperation to maintain Denmark’s position as a leader in life sciences.
