National Health Policy Strategy and Plan

Plan National De Développement Sanitaire (PNDS) 2021-2030

Burkina Faso’s National Health Development Plan (PNDS) 2021–2030 aims to strengthen the health system, achieve universal health coverage, and improve governance. The plan focuses on primary healthcare, financial sustainability, and human resource development, ensuring equitable access to quality health services. It aligns with the country’s long-term development goals and global health commitments. Key priorities include reducing maternal and child mortality, expanding immunization coverage, and improving access to essential medicines. Investments in health infrastructure, digital health systems, and decentralized healthcare delivery have enhanced service availability. However, health financing challenges, workforce shortages, and regional disparities continue to hinder progress. The government has emphasized public-private partnerships, community engagement, and performance-based funding mechanisms to improve service efficiency. The strategy also seeks to enhance health emergency preparedness, strengthen epidemiological surveillance, and address emerging disease threats. Efforts to improve health governance, accountability, and intersectoral coordination are ongoing but require sustained investment and political commitment. Despite progress, challenges remain in resource mobilization, healthcare accessibility in rural areas, and retaining skilled professionals. Ensuring long-term financial sustainability, expanding preventive healthcare, and optimizing service delivery models will be critical to achieving the PNDS objectives.

Strengthen health governance, leadership, and intersectoral coordination.
