National Strategic Plan for Health 2002-2012
Barbados’ Strategic Plan for Health (2002–2012) aimed to modernize the healthcare system, enhance service delivery, and address emerging health challenges. The plan focused on health promotion, disease prevention, primary care expansion, and improved governance to achieve universal health coverage and equity. Significant progress was made in reducing infant mortality, improving maternal health, and strengthening disease surveillance systems. Investments in public health infrastructure, workforce training, and chronic disease management contributed to better health outcomes. However, challenges persisted, including rising non-communicable diseases (NCDs), healthcare financing limitations, and disparities in access to specialized care. The plan prioritized expanding primary healthcare, integrating mental health services, and strengthening health information systems. Efforts were made to enhance environmental health regulations, modernize hospital services, and promote healthy lifestyles. Despite progress, financial sustainability, resource allocation inefficiencies, and gaps in rural healthcare access remained critical concerns. While the plan laid a strong foundation for public health improvements and system integration, continued investment in health workforce capacity, digital health solutions, and multi-sectoral collaboration will be essential for future healthcare resilience and sustainability.
