National Health System Strategic Plan 2010-2020
The Bahamas’ National Health System Strategic Plan (2010–2020) aimed to strengthen healthcare governance, expand service accessibility, and improve health outcomes through a systems-thinking approach. The plan focused on multi-sectoral collaboration, universal health coverage, and evidence-based decision-making. Significant progress was made in health workforce development, infrastructure investment, and digital health initiatives. The introduction of the National Prescription Drug Plan improved access to essential medications, while disease prevention and health promotion strategies targeted non-communicable diseases (NCDs). However, fragmented healthcare financing, workforce shortages, and gaps in rural service provision remain challenges. The strategy prioritized integrated primary healthcare, hospital efficiency, and improved mental health services. Efforts were made to enhance public-private partnerships, community-based care, and long-term health system sustainability. Despite progress in data-driven governance and regulatory reforms, issues with healthcare affordability and resource allocation persist. While the plan laid a strong foundation for universal health access and service integration, continued investment in workforce capacity, financing mechanisms, and digital health expansion is critical for sustainable progress.
