Colombia’s first ever youth tobacco survey shows a high level of smoking among adolescents
(3 Dec 2018)
In the end of 2018, Colombia presented the results of its first ever Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS), a national survey monitoring tobacco use among school students. The results revealed high numbers of both tobacco use and exposure to tobacco smoking among the youth aged 13 to 15 in Colombia. In addition, the number of students who reported they had received information about the health impacts of tobacco was strikingly low. The data shows that further efforts to prevent tobacco use among adolescents will therefore be needed in the implementation of the WHO FCTC.

Ukraine sees a decline in tobacco use and exposure among children since 2011
(6 Nov 2018)
Results of the latest Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) of Ukraine were released in autumn 2018. The survey was conducted for the third time in Ukraine in 2017.The new statistics show a significant drop in tobacco use among youth in Ukraine compared to 2011 results. Second-hand smoke exposure experienced an even more radical decrease, dropping from around 70% in 2011 to just over 20% in 2017. However, an increase in smokeless tobacco and emerging product use poses a challenge for policy-making, calling for new regulations to protect the youth.

Bangladesh presents new GATS results on declined tobacco use
(31 Aug 2018)
Bangladesh presented its latest results of a Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) in August 2018, assessing the prevalence of tobacco use and exposure in the adult population on a national level. The statistics indicate a notable decrease in all tobacco use between 2009 and 2017. Successful implementation of health warnings and tobacco taxation in line with the WHO FCTC has had a significant impact on the results. Future tobacco control efforts need to focus especially on smokeless tobacco, as well as preventing second-hand smoke exposure on workplaces.
