The law authorized the extension of the state of health emergency in 2021.
Lei No 09/2018 Lei Base de Saude
This Law establishes the fundamental principles, rights, and responsibilities for the country's healthcare system, and provides for the overall organization of health care in the country. It also establishes provisions relating to the formulation of the national health policy as well as provides for the creation of the National Health Council.
The law creates a public administrative establishment, called the "Agence Nationale de Sécurité Sanitaire", under the supervision of the Ministry of Health. The mission of the Agence is to implement the strategic orientations of the Ministry of Health in the field of health safety.

The Code provides rules regarding different rears of public health as the prevention and control of communicable diseases; sanitation and housing; and food and water protection among other aspects.
