Bio

Ludovico Carrino (Ph.D) is a Research Fellow at the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at King’s College London, as well as Adjunct Professor of Public Economics at the University of Trieste, and Affiliated Researcher at the Department of Economics at the University of Venezia Ca’ Foscari.

Dr Carrino is a Public and Health Economist with a focus on the Economics of Ageing. He is an expert in the economics of Long-Term Care, as he studies how public policies affect inequalities in demand and supply of formal and informal care in an international comparative perspective, and the individual and societal costs of care. Moreover, his research aims at understanding how institutional contexts, such as social care and pensions policies, affect inequalities in health and wellbeing across and within generations, e.g., by affecting employment and savings decisions, as well as the exchanges of time and financial support between older people and their family. In his research, Ludovico employs advanced quantitative methods for causal inference, applied to large datasets from Europe and worldwide.

His research has been published in leading journals in economics, epidemiology and gerontology, such as Health Economics, Social Science and Medicine, the American Journal of Epidemiology, and the Journal of Gerontology. He published a book with Palgrave on the extent to which public policies of Long Term Care in Europe are able to cover people in need of care. Ludovico is currently Co-I in an Open Research Area (ORA) funded project led by Prof. Marjolein Broese van Groenou (Vrije U Amsterdam), investigating how different long-term care systems and recent long-term care reforms are associated with socioeconomic inequalities in care among older adults, and the consequences of these inequalities for the wellbeing of older care users and care givers. He is PI of a project funded by King’s College and the Université de Paris, on the effectiveness of European Long-Term Care programmes in tackling frailty in older Europeans.
