This course aims to support host nations and event organizers in planning and delivering a safe and successful event, as part of WHO’s ongoing support to countries in strengthening the International Health Regulations capacities for prevention, detection and response to the Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) public health emergencies, in the context of hosting Mass Gathering (MG) events.
The online course will provide an overview of the basic principles of CBRN preparedness and response in the context of mass gatherings, as well as the opportunities presented for a positive health legacy in this. It consists of six modules:
- Module 1. Introduction to CBRN considerations in Mass Gatherings
- Module 2. CBRN incidents and Emergency Management Plan: Chemical threats
- Module 3. CBRN incidents and Emergency Management Plan: Biological threats
- Module 4. CBRN incidents and Emergency Management Plan: Radiological and Nuclear threats
- Module 5. CBRN incidents key considerations, legacy and evaluation
- Module 6. Risk Communication and Community Engagement and Infodemic Management in CBRN incidents
Target Audience: Public health professionals, mass gatherings organizers, public safety and other multi-sectoral emergency planners and responders involved in the planning of delivery of a Mass Gathering event.
After completing this module you will be able to:
- Describe the basics of CBRN incidents, CBRN risk assessment and CBRN incidents management, including Emergency Medical Team's (EMT) role,
- Identify the basics of CBRN in the context of mass gathering events,
- Outline the main elements of preparedness and response to CBRN incidents in the context of mass gatherings (e.g. assessment, detection, decontamination and control measures, command and control practices, risk communication, etc),
- Explain the importance of advance planning and the opportunities presented for mitigation of the risks and a positive health legacy in the area of CBRN in mass gatherings.

The online course will provide an overview of the key steps and considerations that a host country will need to take when planning to host a MG. It consists of one introduction and eight independent technical modules.
Target Audience:Public health professionals and stakeholders.
After completing this module you will be able to:
- Describe what Mass Gatherings (MGs) are and how they are defined.
- Explain the additional health challenges posed by MGs organizations responsible for the health of the population.
- Recognise the importance of advance planning and the opportunities presented for a positive health legacy.
