Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the perceptions and attitudes of waterpipe (shisha) smokers in Qatar regarding the health risks associated with addiction and to determine their intentions to quit. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 181 self-reported waterpipe smokers. Participants were approached in public places as well as in shisha cafes in Qatar. The questionnaire included items related to perception, attitude and intention to quit. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were performed for data analyses, with P ≤ 0.05 considered statistically significant. RESULTS: About 44% of the respondents believed that waterpipe smoking was safer than cigarette smoking, and more than 70% would not mind if their children became involved in waterpipe smoking. More than half of the current smokers wanted to quit smoking shisha at some point, and 17% identified health concerns as the main motivating factor for their intention to quit. CONCLUSION: A large proportion of shisha smokers viewed shisha as a safer alternative to cigarettes, yet they admitted to intending to quit. These findings underscore the need to design educational interventions and awareness campaigns as well as impose stringent laws on waterpipe smoking in public places in Qatar.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To identify the perception level, and knowledge level of health risks due to waterpipe tobacco smoking, and knowledge about prohibition of waterpipe tobacco smoking, of foreign tourists in Thailand. MATERIAL AND METHOD: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study, carried out among foreign tourists in nightspots on Khao San Road area of Bangkok. Structured interview questionnaire was the data collection instrument for 176 convenience-sampling. RESULTS: More than half (52.3%) of the foreign tourists had a poor level of perception about waterpipe smoking. Majority of foreign tourists (75.5%) had low level of knowledge on the health risks. More than 50% didn't know about the illegal status of waterpipe smoking in Thailand. Chi-square analysis showed that the region where tourists reside was statistically associated with the perception level regarding waterpipe smoking. Age of waterpipe smoking initiation was associated with the region and gender Age of tourists was associated with the knowledge on prohibition of waterpipe smoking. CONCLUSION: Raising awareness among foreign tourists through media advocacy about the rules and regulations regarding waterpipe smoking is necessary to support tobacco control policy. Strict enforcement of the existing law on prohibiting waterpipe smoking should be implemented, Authorities should inform owners/managers of waterpipe, tobacco-smoking prohibition, and require them to put up prohibition signs in their establishments, in both Thai and English languages.

Abstract
The seriousness of health problems caused by tobacco warrents serious attention. The extent to which smokers know the health implications and addictive nature of cigarettes is critical in control of tobacco use thereby, assessment of people's understanding to the health risks of smoking can estimate public awareness which is necessary for tobacco control. This household cross-sectional study was conducted in Bany Ghany village which is 20 km south of El- Minia City with 20 000 inhabitants in September, 2000. The aim of this study was lo describe the knowledge profile of current smokers regarding smoking and its health consequences, and to measure the health toll of smoking on heavy smokers. A household survey was undertaken and the initial screening indicated that 3440 villagers are currently smoking in Bany Ghany with a total prevalence of 17.2 percent. About 20 percent of current smokers 698] were randomly selected from the total smokers to be interviewed. An interview questionnaire was used which include demographic data and smoking history, amount and duration and questions regarding knowledge and encompass most of the possible health risks posed by smoking. Of all smokers interviewed, two hundred heavy smokers 25 or more cigarettes per day] were further subjected to explicit clinical examination. About 52.3 percent of the current smokers were illiterate. 87.8 percent were married and 7 percent were unemployed. Nearly 70 percent initiated smoking as a response to peer pressure and influence of friends. Out of 698 smokers interviewed, 96 percent had the knowledge that smoking is hazardous to health which is risk taking behavior. Almost 30.8 percent were heavy smokers. 40.2 percent were moderate smokers and 29 percent were mild smokers. Nearly two-third of the sample smoke cigarettes alone, 16. 7 percent smoke in addition shisha or Goza, and only 7.9 percent smoke shisha or goza alone. Mean numbers of cigarettes smoked per day was 17.7 +/- 11 25. Mean age of the study sample was 42.1 +/- 132, the mean age of smoking initiation was 20.1 +/- 9.1, and the mean cost of smoking per month was LE 53 +/- 75.5. Mean monthly income was 150.8 +/- 106.3. Mean numbers of quitting trials was 3.2 +/- 3.1. Among the causes of failure of previous trials of quitting were lack of inner drive in 66.7 percent, peer pressure represented 15.7 percent, being not serious in 12.9 percent and lastly not convinced was reported by 4.7 percent of the smokers. Reasons behind resorting to quitting trials was found to be related to occurrence of health problems in 35.2 percent of the cases, economic strain in 20.8 percent of cases and 40. 8 percent of cases were due to the knowledge that smoking can pose health risk, and social conflicts were found to be responsible for quitting trials in 3.2 percent of cases. Mean duration of smoking was found to be significantly longer among those who denied any relation between smoking and cancer or heart disease. On interviewing and examining heavy cigarette smokers, cardiopulmonary manifestations was diagnosed in the form of chronic cough, hypertension and corpulmonale in 55 percent, 8 percent and 15 percent of the total heavy smokers respectively. Community intervention trial for smoking cessation is recommended to change smoking behavior, achieve and maintain cessation

Abstract
INTRODUCTION: U.S. adolescents increasingly use e-cigarettes. The perceived harm of e-cigarettes has not been described, nor has the correlation between harm perception and e-cigarette use been assessed. This study examines correlates of e-cigarette harm perception and use of e-cigarettes in a national survey. METHODS: We used cross-sectional nationally representative data from the 2012 National Youth Tobacco Survey (n = 24,658). Cross-tabulations and multivariate ordered probit and logistic regression models were employed to assess relative harm perception and e-cigarette use. RESULTS: Half of U.S. adolescents had heard of e-cigarettes. Of these, 13.2% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 11.7-14.9) and 4.0% (95% CI = 3.4-4.7) reported ever or currently using e-cigarettes, respectively. Of those aware of e-cigarettes, 34.2% (95% CI = 32.8-35.6) believed e-cigarettes were less harmful than cigarettes. Among those trying e-cigarettes, 71.8% (95% CI = 69.0-74.5) believed e-cigarettes were comparatively less harmful. Females and those >/= 17 years old were more likely to perceive e-cigarettes as more harmful relative to cigarettes, while on average Whites, users of other tobacco products, and those with family members who used tobacco were more likely to perceive e-cigarettes as comparatively safer. Among cigarette-naive e-cigarette users, use of other tobacco products and perceived harm reduction by e-cigarettes were, respectively, on average associated with 1.6 and 4.1 percentage-point increases in e-cigarette use. CONCLUSIONS: Perception of e-cigarettes as less harmful than conventional cigarettes was associated with increased e-cigarette use, including among cigarette-naive e-cigarette users. These findings should prompt further scientific investigation and merit attention from regulators.

Abstract
This study was conducted during February-March 2012 to determine the perception and support regarding smoke-free policy among tourists at Suvarnabhumi International Airport, Bangkok, Thailand. In this cross-sectional study, 200 tourists (n = 200) were enrolled by convenience sampling and interviewed by structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, chi-square, and multinomial logistic regression were adopted in the study. Results revealed that half (50%) of the tourists were current smokers and 55% had visited Thailand twice or more. Three quarter (76%) of tourists indicated that they would visit Thailand again even if it had a 100% smoke-free regulation. Almost all (99%) of the tourists had supported for the smoke-free policy (partial ban and total ban), and current smokers had higher percentage of support than non-smokers. Two factors, current smoking status and knowledge level, were significantly associated with perception level. After analysis with Multinomial Logistic Regression, it was found that perception, country group, and presence of designated smoking room (DSR) were associated with smoke-free policy. Recommendation is that, at institution level effective monitoring system is needed at the airport. At policy level, the recommendation is that effective comprehensive policy needed to be emphasized to ensure smoke-free airport environment.

Abstract
Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are nicotine-delivery devices that are increasingly used, especially by young people. Because e-cigarettes lack many of the substances found in regular tobacco, they are often perceived as a safer smoking alternative, especially in high-risk situations such as pregnancy. However, studies suggest that it is exposure to nicotine that is most detrimental to prenatal development. The authors studied perceptions of tobacco and e-cigarette health risks using a multiple-choice survey. To study the perceived safety of e-cigarettes versus tobacco cigarettes, 184 modified Global Health Youth Surveys (WHO, http://www.who.int/tobacco/surveillance/gyts/en/ ) were completed electronically or on paper. Age range, smoking status, and perceptions about tobacco cigarettes and e-cigarettes were studied. The results verified that younger people use e-cigarettes more than older people. Tobacco cigarettes were perceived as more harmful than e-cigarettes to health in general, including lung cancer and pregnancy. Although more research is necessary, the authors postulate that the perception that e-cigarettes are safer during pregnancy may induce pregnant women to use these devices more freely. Given that nicotine is known to cause fetal harm, pregnant mothers who smoke e-cigarettes could cause even greater harm to the fetus because e-cigarettes are perceived as being safer than tobacco cigarettes. Until more data about the effects of nicotine during pregnancy are available, the authors advocate for labeling of e-cigarettes as potentially harmful, at least during pregnancy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: In Lao PDR, health warnings were first introduced with printed warning messages on the side of the cigarette package in 1993 and again in 2004. Lao PDR same year ratified the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) but has not yet implemented pictorial health warnings. This paper aims to examine the perception and opinion of policymakers on "text-only" and "pictorial" health warnings and to understand lay people's perceptions on current health warnings and their opinions on the recommended types of health warnings. METHODS: A combination of quantitative and qualitative methods were used in this cross-sectional study conducted in 2008. A purposive sample of 15 policymakers, and a representative sample of 1360 smokers and non-smokers were recruited. A range of different areas were covered including consumer attitudes towards current and proposed cigarette package design, views on health warning messages on the flip/slide and inserts, and views on the relative importance of the size, content and pictures of health warning messages. Descriptive statistics and content analysis were used. RESULTS: Policy makers and survey respondents said that the current health warning messages were inappropriate, ineffective, and too small in size. All respondents perceived pictorial health warnings as a potentially powerful element that could be added to the messages that can communicate quickly, and dramatically. The majority of policymakers and survey respondents strongly supported the implementation of pictorial health warnings. The non-smokers agreed that the graphic pictorial health warnings were generally more likely than written health warnings to stimulate thinking about the health risks of smoking, by conveying potential health effects, increasing and reinforcing awareness of the negative health effect of smoking, aiding memorability of the health effects and arousing fear of smoking among smokers. CONCLUSIONS: The study suggested that current warnings are too small and that content is inadequate and designed to be hidden on the side pack. These findings are in line with FCTC's requirements and provide strong support for introducing pictorial warning labels also in Lao PDR. Furthermore, the awareness of Members of Parliament about tobacco control measures holds promise at the highest political level.
