Abstract
This cross-sectional study examined the differences in barriers to cessation and reasons for quitting smoking among dual smokers of cigarettes and waterpipe tobacco, exclusive cigarette smokers and exclusive waterpipe smokers. Participants were Arab American adults residing in Richmond, Virginia, who were recruited from Middle Eastern grocery stores, restaurants/lounges and faith and charity organizations. The study yielded several key findings: (1) Exclusive cigarette and waterpipe smokers had similar mean barriers to quitting and were more concerned about their health than dual smokers. (F(2, 150) = 5.594, p = 0.0045). This implies that barriers to smoking and health concerns could be a function of the individual who smokes rather than the modality of smoking itself. (2) Exclusive cigarette or waterpipe smokers and dual smokers may have different reasons for quitting, since they have different reasons for smoking. The proportion of smokers who endorsed smoking as a messy habit as the reason among exclusive cigarette smokers was 0.37, whereas the proportion among exclusive waterpipe smokers was 0.04 and among dual smokers 0.39. The difference in proportions is significant, chi2 (df = 2, N = 154) = 13.17, p = 0.0014. In summary, this study supports the need to further investigate dual cigarette and waterpipe smokers, as the study results indicate greater barriers to smoking cessation in this group. Recognition and understanding of these barriers among dual tobacco users would be important for any future tobacco intervention among waterpipe smokers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Researchers in tobacco control are concerned about the increasing prevalence of waterpipe smoking in the United States, which may pose similar risks as cigarette smoking. This review explores the prevalence of waterpipe smoking in the United States as well as the shortcomings of current U.S. policy for waterpipe control and regulation. METHODS: Researchers conducted a literature review for waterpipe articles dated between 2004 and 2015 using five online databases: MEDLINE, CINHAHL, ScienceDirect, PMC, and Cochrane Library. RESULTS: To date, few studies have explored the marketing and regulation of waterpipe smoking in the U.S., which has increased in the last ten years, especially among women, adolescents, and young adults. Data indicate that the majority of waterpipe smokers are unaware of the potential risks of use. In addition, current tobacco control policies do not address waterpipe smoking, enabling tobacco companies to readily market and sell waterpipe products to young adults, who are at risk for becoming lifelong smokers. CONCLUSION: Policy makers in the area of public health need to update existing tobacco regulations to include waterpipe smoking. Similarly, public health researchers should develop public health campaigns and interventions to address the increasing rates of waterpipe smoking in the United States.

Abstract
As future physicians capable of controlling tobacco dependence in the population, medical students are considered a main target for tobacco control interventions. This cross-sectional study reported on the prevalence of tobacco use (cigarettes and waterpipes) and associated knowledge and behaviour among 6th-year medical students in 2009-2010 from 6 medical schools in Lebanon. The self-administered questionnaire based on the Global Health Professional Survey (GHPSS) core questions also enquired about training in tobacco cessation approaches. All enrolled students were asked to participate; the response rate was 191/354 (54.3%). The prevalence of tobacco use was 26.3% for cigarettes and 29.5% for waterpipes. Smoking waterpipes was the only significant predictor for cigarette smoking and there was no difference by sex and socioeconomic status. A minority reported ever receiving any formal training in treatment approaches for tobacco dependence. Medical schools should include tobacco dependence treatment training programmes in their curriculum and discourage tobacco use.

Abstract
Smoke-free laws significantly impact indoor air quality. However, the temporal effects of these laws on indoor air pollution have not been determined. This paper assesses the temporal impact of one smoke-free law on indoor air quality. This quasi-experimental study compared the indoor air quality of nine hospitality venues and one bingo hall in Georgetown, Kentucky, before and after implementation of a 100% smoke-free workplace law. We made real-time measurements of particulate matter with 2.5 microm aerodynamic diameter or smaller (PM2.5). Among the nine Georgetown hospitality venues, the average indoor PM2.5 concentration was 84 microg/m3 before the law took effect. The average indoor PM2.5 concentrations in nine compliant venues significantly decreased to 18 microg/m3 one week after the law took effect. Three venues having 82 microg/m3 before the law had significantly lower levels from the first day the law was implemented, and the low level was maintained. Compliance with the law is critical to achieving clean indoor air. Indoor air pollution in the bingo hall was not reduced until the establishment decided to comply with the law. The smoke-free law showed immediate impact on indoor air quality.

Abstract
Nutrient sources in soils are often heterogeneously distributed. Although many studies have examined the root responses to local N and P enrichments in the soil, less research was conducted on root responses to Mg patches. New roots of pre-grown Mg-insufficient and Mg-sufficient plants of Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) seedlings were allowed to grow into four other pots of equal size, which were placed under the tree-bearing pot. Soils in the lower pots were either unfertilised, or supplied with Mg, or NPK or a mixture of NPKMg sources. Plants were harvested after 9 months of growth. Compared to the corresponding controls (Mg versus unfertilised and NPKMg versus NPK), Mg additions did not have a significant effect on either root dry matter, total root length (TRL) or specific root length (SRL), irrespective of tree species and plant Mg nutritional status. In contrast, NPK and NPKMg additions significantly increased the root dry matter and TRL in the nutrient-rich soil patch, and decreased SRL in Norway spruce. However, the observed root morphological changes did not occur in Scots pine. Root Mg concentrations were increased in Mg-rich soil patches, but those accumulations varied with tree species. Mg accumulation in a marked patch was measured only in newly grown roots of Mg-sufficient Norway spruce, whereas a more homogenous distribution of Mg concentration was observed for all newly grown roots in Mg-insufficient trees in the four soil treatments. In Scots pine, Mg accumulations occurred in both Mg-insufficient and Mg-sufficient plants. These results suggest that Mg patches in the soil may not lead to a local increase in root growth, but to Mg uptake and root Mg accumulation. Tree roots react differently to Mg patches in comparison to their response to N or P patches in the soil.

Abstract
In the present study, we determined the molecular epidemiology of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) in Escherichia coli isolated from diseased farmed pigeons in China. A total of 71 E. coli isolates were collected from three pigeon farms from 2011 to 2012 and screened for the presence of the ESBL genes. The ESBLs producers were further tested for the presence of PMQR-encoding genes as well as the 16S rRNA methylase gene using PCR and DNA sequence analysis. Co-transfer of plasmids encoding for ESBLs, PMQR determinants and/or 16S rRNA methylase gene was performed by conjugation into E. coli. The genetic relatedness and plasmid replicon type were determined. A total of 41 ESBLs producers were identified. Only CTX-M type ESBLs were detected, with the most common CTX-M types being CTX-M-65 (n=17), CTX-M-27 (n=11), CTX-M-55 (n=10). Thirty-eight CTX-M-positive isolates were found to harbor at least one PMQR gene, with aac(6')-Ib-cr (n=32) and oqxAB (n=21) being the most prevalent. The rmtB was the only prevalent 16S rRNA methylase gene detected in 24 (58.1%) CTX-M-positive isolates. Although most of the CTX-M producers had distinct pulsotypes, clonal transmission in the same farm was observed. blaCTX-M genes were carried by IncF alone or in combination with IncK plasmids with three different sizes, including 76.8Kb (n=20), 194Kb (n=5), 104.5Kb (n=2). PFGE profiles of CTX-M-positive E. coli isolates indicated potential horizontal spread of these multidrug resistant strains along with those CTX-M encoding genes. Our findings highlight the importance of pigeons as a reservoir of multiple antimicrobial resistance genes.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to characterize the virulence potential and determine the molecular epidemiology of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) in CTX-M-producing Escherichia coli isolated from piglets with diarrhea in China. A total of 62 E. coli isolates were obtained among which 49 and 13 were collected from diarrheic and healthy piglets, respectively. Cefotaxime resistant strains were screened for the presence of ESBL, adhesin and exotoxin genes as well as for their biofilm-forming ability. Characterization of blaCTX-M plasmids was determined by conjugation along with the determination of genetic relatedness and plasmid replicon type. CTX-M producers were found in 36 isolates with 6 different subtypes: blaCTX-M-14,27,65 from CTX-M-9G (n=27) and blaCTX-M-55, 15,79 from CTX-M-1G (n=22). This also included 13 isolates that carried two different CTX-M genes. Thirty of 36 CTX-M producers and 12 of 13 multiple CTX-M alleles were confirmed from diarrheic piglets. The presence of the iron regulatory gene irp2 as well as EAST1 was found in 83.3% (25/30) of CTX-M-producing isolates from diarrheic piglets and these were significantly better biofilm formers. PFGE profiles of CTX-M-positive isolates indicated the spread of multidrug resistance was primarily horizontal and spread via transferable plasmids. Most blaCTX-M-9G genes (10/17) were located on the IncFIB type plasmid with sizes of 40-145 kb, while the blaCTX-M-1G (11/16) genes were located on the approximately 100 kb IncN-type plasmid. Together, our findings demonstrate that CTX-M ESBL-producing E. coli from diarrheic piglets were associated with serious multidrug resistance, increased biofilm-forming ability and the irp2 gene of HPI. Our findings highlight the need to urgent control the spread of resistant strains through food chain.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to characterise the beta-lactamase genes of cephalosporin-resistant Escherichia coli isolated from farm animals in Guangdong Province of China. Of 592 E. coli isolates recovered from farm animals from 2003-2005, 50 (8.4%) showed cephalosporin resistance. Polymerase chain reaction and sequencing analysis showed that 14 isolates (2.4%) from chickens, ducks, pigs and partridges were positive for the bla(CTX-M) gene (10 for bla(CTX-M-14) and 4 for bla(CTX-M-27)). CMY-2 was detected for the first time in mainland China in six E. coli isolates (1.0%) from chickens and goose. Except for one isolate, bla(CTX-M)- and bla(CMY-2)-containing isolates also harboured the bla(TEM-1b) gene. Conjugation experiments demonstrated that the bla(CTX-M) and bla(TEM) genes could be transferred to E. coli DH5alpha. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) showed that the 14 CTX-M-producing isolates belonged to 12 different types. Two isolates (one from a chicken, the other from a pig) containing CTX-M-14 showed indistinguishable PFGE patterns, indicating clonal dissemination of this strain among animals from different farms. This study describes for the first time the emergence of CTX-M- and CMY-2-producing E. coli among farm animals in China, with the CTX-M-9 group being the predominant extended-spectrum beta-lactamase detected.

Abstract
A total of 247 Escherichia coli isolates (148 from diseased or dead poultry and 99 from diseased pets in the People's Republic of China) were screened for extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) determinants by PCR and sequencing. Then, 16S rRNA methylase genes were detected among ESBL-producing isolates. Clonal relatedness of the E. coli isolates was examined by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. Conjugation experiments were performed to investigate the association of 16S rRNA methylases and ESBLs, and plasmid contents were also characterized. Among 247 E. coli isolates, 74 (29.96%) isolates were positive for blaCTX-M genes, 42 from pets (12 from cats and 30 from dogs) and 32 from poultry (12 from chickens and 20 from ducks). The most common CTX-M type in isolates from pets was blaCTX-M-14, whereas blaCTX-M-27 was the most common for poultry. rmtB was dectected in 39 of the 74 blaCTX-M-positive isolates, 18 from pets and 21 from poultry. One strain from a pet was found to harbor blaCTX-M-14, blaCTX-M-15, and rmtB. blaCTX-M and rmtB were found to be colocated on the same transferable plasmid in 16 isolates. These genes were on the same or similar plasmids (eight F2:A-:B- and two IncN) in isolates from ducks, whereas they were colocated on the similar F2:A-:B- or similar F33:A-:B- plasmids in isolates of pets origin. In conclusion, similar F2:A-:B- plasmids and similar F33:A-:B- plasmids are responsible for the dissemination of both rmtB and blaCTX-Mgenes in E. coli isolates from poultry and pets, respectively.

Abstract
In this study, we focused on evaluating the occurrence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli in fecal samples of healthy ducks and environmental samples from a duck farm in South China. Duck cloacal swabs and pond water samples were cultivated on MacConkey agar plates supplemented with ceftiofur. Individual colonies were examined for ESBL production. Bacteria identified as E. coli were screened for the presence of ESBL and plasmid-borne AmpC genes. The genetic relatedness, plasmid replicon type, and genetic background were determined. Of 245 samples analyzed, 123 had E. coli isolates with ceftiofur MICs higher than 8 mug/ml (116 [50.4%] from 230 duck samples and 7 [46.7%] from 15 water samples). bla(CTX-M), bla(SHV-12), bla(CMY-2), and bla(DHA-1) were identified in 108, 5, 9, and 1 isolates, respectively. The most common bla(CTX-M) genes were bla(CTX-M-27) (n = 34), bla(CTX-M-55) (n = 27), bla(CTX-M-24e) (n = 22), and bla(CTX-M-105) (n = 20), followed by bla(CTX-M-14a), bla(CTX-M-14b), bla(CTX-M-24a), and bla(CTX-M-24b). Although most of the CTX-M producers had distinct pulsotypes, clonal transmission between duck and water isolates was observed. bla(CTX-M) genes were carried by transferable IncN, IncF, and untypeable plasmids. The novel CTX-M gene bla(CTX-M-105) was flanked by two hypothetical protein sequences, partial ISEcp1 upstream and truncated IS903D, iroN, orf1, and a Tn1721-like element downstream. It is suggested that the horizontal transfer of bla(CTX-M) genes mediated by mobile elements and the clonal spread of CTX-M-producing E. coli isolates contributed to the dissemination of bla(CTX-M) in the duck farm. Our findings highlight the importance of ducks for the dissemination of transferable antibiotic resistance genes into the environment.
