Abstract

Abstract
The waterpipe is an ancient Middle Eastern tobacco delivery system, which is also known as hookah, shisha, or narghile, and it is gaining widespread use. Waterpipes are often perceived as less dangerous than cigarettes. The amount of smoke inhaled in a waterpipe session may equal that produced by more than 100 cigarettes with high nicotine, carbon monoxide, and carcinogen intake. A case of significantly elevated intraoperative carboxyhemoglobin level and decreased oxyhemoglobin saturation in a patient with recent waterpipe use is presented.

Abstract
Hookah smoking, at one time confined to North Africa, the eastern Mediterranean region, the Arabian peninsula, and Southeast Asia, has begun to spread throughout the world. As some practices of eastern and Arab cultures reach the United States, the number of people using hookah on an experimental or regular basis has increased. Carbon monoxide poisoning can be a common adverse effect, possibly undetected by physicians, in hookah smokers. The authors report a case of carbon monoxide poisoning secondary to smoking tobacco through a hookah.

Abstract
A novel sorbent for magnetic solid-phase extraction by self-assembling of organosulfur compound, (bis-(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)-dithiophosphinic acid), onto the silver-coated Fe(3)O(4) nanoparticles was introduced. Due to the formation of covalent bond of S-Ag, the new coating on the silver surface was very stable and showed high thermal stability (up to 320°C). The size, morphology, composition, and properties of the prepared nanoparticles have also been characterized and determined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray analyzer (EDX), dynamic light scattering (DLS), Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). Extraction efficiency of the new sorbent was investigated by extraction of five polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as model compounds. The optimum extraction conditions for PAHs were obtained as of extraction time, 20 min; 50 mg sorbent from 100 mL of the sample solution, and elution with 100 µL of 1-propanol under fierce vortex for 2 min. Under the optimal conditions, the calibration curves were obtained in the range of 0.05-100 µg L(-1) (R(2)>0.9980) and the LODs (S/N=3) were obtained in the range of 0.02-0.10 µg L(-1). Relative standard deviations (RSDs) for intra- and inter-day precision were 2.6-4.2% and 3.6-8.3%, respectively. In addition, feasibility of the method was demonstrated with extraction and determination of PAHs from some real samples containing tap water, hookah water as well as soil samples with relative recovery of 82.4-109.0% and RSDs of 3.5-11.6%.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To identify the prevalence and predictors of the water-pipe (WP) smoking epidemic in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). METHODS: A cross-sectional study conducted with 16-18 year-old high school students in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. RESULTS: Of the 1272 participants, 414 (33.0%) reported having tried WP smoking. Of this group, 141 (34.1%) were female and 273 (65.9%) were male. Further, 129 (10.2%) students were current WP smokers who had used at least one rock in the past month; 20 were female (1.6%) and 120 were male (8.6%). Regarding age, 276 (68.1%) students who tried WP smoking at least once began when they were over 11 years of age, whereas 129 (31.9%) began WP smoking at or before 11 years of age. Adjusted odds ratios showed that trying WP smoking at least once was associated with smoking after the age of 11 (p=0.021, OR 7.7; CI: 1.4-43.6) and accepting water-pipes from a friend (p=0.024, OR 10.6; CI: 1.4-83.4). CONCLUSION: A high prevalence of WP smoking exists among male and female high schools students in Riyadh, KSA. WP smoking was reported to begin in early adulthood.

Abstract
This article provides a review of tobacco smoking using a hookah, an emerging threat to public health, especially among young adults. Knowledge deficits persist in regards to this form of smoking, because many perceive it as less harmful than cigarette smoking and little research is available. Knowledge about hookah smoking can be instrumental in guiding health professionals to address this practice with their clients and in their communities. A failure to address all tobacco products as unique, individual entities undermines any success in public policy efforts to control tobacco use.
