WHO Conducts National Emergency Medical Teams Training in Timor-Leste

WHO conducted the First National Emergency Medical Team Training of Timor-Leste on 21-23 October 2019 in Dili.  This was organized by Ministry of Health with 35 representatives from the Ministry of Health, Health Emergency Operations Center, National Hospital and 5 Regional Referral Hospitals participating.

The Health Bureau of the Government of Macao Special Administrative Region and the Ministry of Health of Indonesia supported this training workshop.  Their speakers shared important experiences and lessons learned from the establishment of the Macao Emergency Medical Team and the development of a national EMT accreditation systems in Indonesia. The 3 day workshop introduced key concepts and component of Emergency Medical Teams according to global standards.  Participants came up with an action plan on key steps for developing a National EMT in Timor-Leste.

The training workshop is part of the implementation of Resolution SEA/RC71/R5 on Strengthening Emergency Medical Teams (EMTs) in the South-East Asia Region adopted by the WHO Regional Committee for South-East Asia in 2018.  The purpose of the EMT initiative is to improve the timeliness and quality of health services provided by national and international Emergency Medical Teams and enhance the capacity of national health systems in leading the activation and coordination of this response in the immediate aftermath of a disaster, outbreak and/or other emergency
