Following the 3rd World Congress of Age-friendly Cities and Communities held from 16 to 18 June in Donostia/San Sebastián, Spain, the conversation continues online and across the Global Network. This news flash brings together Congress highlights, the next two Age-friendly Conversations, new Global Network updates, and learning opportunities from Global Network Members and Affiliates.

Looking back at the 3rd World Congress of Age-friendly Cities and Communities

The 3rd World Congress of Age Friendly Cities and Communities took place in Donostia/San Sebastián, Spain, from 16–18 June 2026 under the theme Transforming Together! A Connected, Equitable and Sustainable Age Friendly World for all generations. The Congress brought Global Network Members and Affiliates, researchers and partners together to share experience and reflect on the future of the global age-friendly movement. The conversation continues online through the next Age-friendly Conversations on social connection and on sustainability and resilience.

Join the next Age-friendly Conversation on social connection in cities and communities (25 June)

Where we live shapes our ability to connect. On 25 June 2026 (Thu), 12:00–13:30 CEST, join the WHO Commission on Social Connection and the WHO Global Network for Age-friendly Cities and Communities for a 90-minute online dialogue on how cities and communities can strengthen social connection, reduce loneliness and social isolation, and create places where people of all ages can participate and belong.

The session, Creating connected places for health and well-being, is part of WHO’s Connection Conversations series and the second in the GNAFCC Age-friendly Conversations Online Series. Interpretation will be available in all UN languages.

Register for the third Age-friendly Conversation: sustainability and resilience

The third Age-friendly Conversation, taking place on 7 July 2026 (Tues) from 14:00–15:30 CEST, will explore sustainability in age-friendly cities and communities, with a focus on resilience and reducing vulnerability. The online discussion (via Zoom) will look at what helps age-friendly work last in practice, how resilience can be built over time, and how age-friendly approaches can support more preventive ways of working.

Global Network Update: Welcome to Thika Municipality, Kenya

The Global Network welcomes Thika Municipality, Kenya, the first member from the WHO African Region to join the Global Network for Age-friendly Cities and Communities! Located in Kiambu County, northeast of Nairobi, Thika is integrating age-friendly action into transport, public spaces, community planning, and access to health care services.

New Network Affiliates strengthen national and regional age-friendly action

The Global Network also welcomes new national, subnational, and regional Affiliates that will help connect age-friendly action across countries and communities:

Together, these Affiliates will support coordination, policy development, cooperation, knowledge exchange, and other Global Network activities within their areas, supporting cities and communities on their age-friendly journeys.

Connect, Inspire, Support: Leadership Course on Age-Friendly Environments (Sharjah, United Arab Emirates)

The University of Sharjah will host Connect, Inspire, Support: Leadership Course on Age-Friendly Environments on 29–30 September 2026. The course will bring participants together to exchange experience, build leadership skills and explore practical ways to create inclusive communities where people of all ages can thrive.

The course is free of charge, and the University of Sharjah will sponsor six eligible candidates.

Register your interest: Workshop on Age-Friendly Environments in Singapore

A workshop on age-friendly environments will take place in Singapore from 25–27 November 2026, hosted by SingHealth. The workshop will focus on creating homes and communities where older people can thrive.

Interested participants can register their interest to receive programme updates and be notified when registration opens.
