Iodine Global Network welcomes the progress report on micronutrient deficiencies. Most countries with data show adequate iodine status among school-age children, but fewer demonstrate adequacy in pregnant women.
Therefore, global success of salt iodization in protecting children from cognitive impairment is at risk, even in Europe and North America.
Salt iodization is cost effective and equitable and must be sustained through national commitment and resources.
With WHO we show that iodine data are often outdated or lacking, creating a false sense of security amidst changing diets and lifestyles.
We call on Member States to monitor programme performance and population iodine status. We developed low-cost tools, such as sentinel surveillance. We are ready to support.
