Individual Statement on the WHO commission on social connection (Item 15.2)
by International Union of Psychological Science
Social connection is a fundamental human need and an essential component of mental well-being. Meaningful relationships provide emotional support, foster a sense of belonging, and contribute to psychological health.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified social isolation as a growing public health concern due to its serious impact on mental health. Prolonged loneliness can contribute to depression, anxiety, stress, low self-esteem, and in severe cases, may increase the risk of self-harm and suicide.
Conversely, strong social connections enhance resilience and enable individuals to cope effectively with personal and societal challenges.
Governments, educational institutions, workplaces, and healthcare systems all have a responsibility to strengthen social connection, by promoting inclusive communities, supporting mental health initiatives, and assisting vulnerable populations. Furthermore, technology should be utilized as a tool to strengthen human interaction and social engagement rather than replace meaningful personal relationships.
