Movendi International

Meeting:

79th WHA Individual Statements

Agenda Item:
- Group 8: Rehab, Indigenous Health, & Nutrition
Statement:

Movendi International welcomes the work on the Global Plan of Action for the Health of Indigenous Peoples and the consultative. Movendi International members are from and work with Indigenous communities who are living with experiences of the severe harm alcohol is causing.

Through our consultations with Indigenous communities in the Americas, Africa, and Asia–Pacific, the harm cause by the products and practices of alcohol companies consistently emerged as a major driver of violence, injuries, and mental ill-health.

Alcohol harm in Indigenous communities is often disproportionately high and is a result of colonialism, corporate exploitation and commercial determinants, as well as policy failure. We call on the Secretariat and Member States to fast-track alcohol policy action for health promotion in Indigenous communities.
