International Association for Suicide Prevention

Meeting:

79th WHA Individual Statements

Agenda Item:
20.1 Reform of the global health architecture and the UN80 Initiative
Statement:

The International Association for Suicide Prevention welcomes the discussion on the future of global health architecture yet we note that mental health and suicide prevention have remained largely absent from these reform conversations, despite over one billion people living with mental health conditions worldwide.

Architecture designed without this reality risks deepening the very inequities reform seeks to address. We urge Member States to ensure people with lived experience of suicide and mental health conditions, alongside civil society, the workforce, young people, and academics, are meaningfully embedded in the consultation process at every stage.

We further call for a person-centred approach that recognises the comorbidities between physical and mental health, and places mental health at the centre of architecture built for current and future global health needs.
