79th WHA Individual Statements
Thank you, Honourable Chair, distinguished delegates,
Rare Diseases International, together with the Global Albinism Alliance, commend the X Member States for their leadership in supporting the Resolution “Radiation and health: strengthening global protection, preparedness and response”.
Several rare health conditions, including albinism, are characterized by heightened UV sensitivity, placing affected individuals at significantly greater risk of developing skin cancer. Effective preventive interventions exist, but they remain too often unavailable or inaccessible.
As climate change increases UV exposure worldwide, this Resolution could not be more timely. We urge Member States to adopt it and allocate the necessary resources for its implementation.
Too often, persons with albinism still die from skin cancer, even though it is entirely preventable through adequate protection, awareness, and access to care.
Thank you.
