79th WHA Individual Statements

Agenda Item:
- Group 4: SDGs & Digital Health
Statement:

PSI notes the poor SDGs’ progress with concern. This shows the need for fundamental reforms based on international solidarity, public services, accountability, decent work and community engagement. WHO and Member States’ must back technical competence with the political will to transform the global finance architecture and public health.

AI expansion in global health must be located within this context as well. It must not be based on a private sector logic of “efficiency” which undermines health workers’ rights.

The manner in which AI is being applied today is not reducing work, it is making work more intensive and precarious. AI uptake in the health sector should not lead to the expansion of health workers’ responsibilities without commensurate improvements in wages and working conditions.

We call on Member States to ensure the draft Global Strategy on digital health protects and promotes workers’ rights in line with the SDGs.
