79th WHA Individual Statements
ILCA is concerned by the continued emergencies that worsen water and food insecurity, and disproportionately affect women and children.
Breastfeeding is a survival system. It is available when water isn’t safe, power is out, roads are closed, and supplies are not reaching the displaced. Breastfeeding support is critical at all times, and plans must be in place to protect it in emergency situations.
Unsolicited donations of infant formula undermine breastfeeding practices and create food insecurity for the most vulnerable. Member states need to incorporate the Operational Guidance on Infant Feeding in Emergencies into national disaster plans, following their commitments under resolutions adopted in 2010 and 2018.
This will protect breastfeeding during emergencies, contributing to infant food security and protection against infections, which are critical and life-saving.
