Stichting Health Action International

Meeting:

79th WHA Individual Statements

Agenda Item:
20.1 Reform of the global health architecture and the UN80 Initiative
Statement:

HAI welcomes the opportunity to contribute to this timely and consequential discussion regarding not only the future of global health architecture but also by implication, the role of WHO within a changing ecosystem.

We acknowledge the political tensions and economic shock currently affecting the ability of the organisation to perform its core functions and deliver on additional mandates; the very thing that Member States demand. But the WHO’s leadership cannot deliver, if Member States fail to honour their budgetary commitments.

Furthermore, there is a risk that the suggested consultation process replicates existing asymmetry between Member States and fails to appropriately take into consideration civil society expertise.

We ask the Secretariat to ensure that stringent conflict of interest rules are upheld during this process.
